JACOB WHOSE NAME WAS CHANGED TO ISRAEL
Abrahams son Isaac, was forty years old when he married Rebekah, Rebekah gave birth to twin boys called, Esau and Jacob.
Esau was a hairy man and grew to be a hunter.
Jacob was his mother’s favourite, whilst Esau was his father’s.
One day Esau said to Jacob, “Give me a meal for my inheritance.”
The deal was done for a bowl of bean soup.
Isaac who was blind called Esau and said, “My son, catch a deer cook and then I will give you the inheritance.”
Rebekah said to Jacob, “I will cook a meal, you give it to your father and you will receive the inheritance”.
Then she put goat skin on the back of his hands and neck.
Isaac was confused, because he heard Jacob, but smelled Esau.
So Isaac felt him and asked, “Are you really my son Esau?”
Jacob replied, “Yes I am”
Then Isaac blessed Jacob with the inheritance.
When Esau found out he growled, “He has stolen my inheritance, I will kill him.”
Rebekah told Jacob, “Esau is planning to kill you. Go to my brother Laban and stay there.”
So Jacob journeyed to his uncle Laban.
That evening Jacob had a dream and the Lord spoke;
“I am the Lord God of Abraham and Isaac. This land shall be given to you, and to your children.”
The next day Jacob built an altar and worshipped the Lord.
Whilst Jacob was at a well Rachel, Laban’s daughter came with her sheep.
“I am Jacob, Rebekah’s son. My mother is the sister of your father Laban.”
Jacob said to his uncle, “I will work for you for seven years, if you will let me marry Rachel.”
But the veiled woman that Jacob married, was not Rachel, but was Rachel’s sister Leah. When confronted Laban said;
“The older sister must marry first.”
So Jacob worked another seven years to marry Rachael.
Jacob loved Rachael.
“Return to the land of your fathers, and I will be with you.”
After God spoke, Jacob started the journey. On route, messengers came to him saying;
“Esau is coming to meet you, with four hundred men!”
Jacob was terrified, so he prayed for help and sent Esau some livestock as a gift.
That night a man wrestled with Jacob and said;
“From now on, you shall be called I-s-r-a-e-l”
Israel saw Esau coming and to his astonishment. Esau greeted him with favour.
Israel had twelve sons by four wives. These twelve sons became known as the twelve tribes of Israel, or the chil
ren of Israel.
